The Jousting Quest: A Quiz About Medieval Knights

This is my third hypothetical project, which I designed as part of my learning experience as an Instructional Designer.

This eLearning project is quiz-based and aims to test the user's knowledge of knights in the Middle Ages.

Tools Used: Articulate 360, Freepix, Canva, Microsoft Word, Pixabay

The Problem

I envisioned a unique method to assess a user's knowledge on a specific topic, suitable for young adults or anyone interested in learning about the Middle Ages.

As we all know, history can sometimes be presented in a less-than-exciting manner. Therefore, engaging students through an interactive quiz can be the most effective way to teach and ensure they retain what they’ve learned.

The Solution

Transforming a quiz into an interactive game can significantly enhance the user's experience, making it both memorable and engaging.

To elevate this experience, I decided to reward correct answers by dressing the knight in armour. Even when the user selects an incorrect response, they will be directed to a slide that provides additional information about the incorrect answer, further enriching their learning.

Action Mapping

Creating a quiz was a straightforward project for which I utilized Microsoft Word to map out the questions and answers. I conducted research on medieval knights and compiled the questions and answers in Word. Below is a screenshot of the questions I developed.

Helper

I created a character named Lady Emeline to provide hints if the user gets stuck. I found a graphic that closely matched my vision, but I made several modifications to ensure she resembled a medieval lady more accurately.

Before

After

I enhanced her appearance by adding cleavage, a circlet, a designed top, and new eyes. Additionally, I incorporated a medieval-style frame and crafted the illusion that Lady Emeline is emerging from it, adding a more engaging perspective.

Visual Guide

I utilized a wide variety of graphics from Canva and manipulated everything using various techniques and layers. The picture below contains numerous graphics that I sourced from different places, altered colours, and layered together.

I tried to keep the colour scheme close to what might be found in medieval times. Additionally, I downloaded fonts that resembled medieval scripts. IM Fell English has a hint of medieval flair, but readability is more important than staying historically accurate.

Final Thoughts

Having completed my third project using Articulate Storyline, I now feel more confident in my instructional design skills. Although I haven't yet had the chance to apply theoretical models like ADDIE, I am certain that my experience and education will ensure the success of the entire process.

My background as a librarian has honed my interviewing skills and critical thinking abilities, which have been invaluable in my teaching endeavours.
